APRIL
☀️ WEATHER
What are the average air temperatures this month?
Average daytime HIGH: 69-71℉
Average nighttime LOW: 58-59℉
● Expect cool sunrise and sunset surf sessions while midday is pleasantly warm.
● April is consistently the driest and windiest month of the year.
● The wind usually increases mid-morning and blows out the waves throughout the afternoon.
💧 WATER
What are the average water temperatures this month?
Average LOW: 59-60℉ (early April)
Average HIGH: 66-67℉ (late April)
● Great news, the water starts to warm up quickly in April!
● This is the perfect time to start surfing again if you have taken the winter season off.
🏄♀️ WETSUITS
What should I wear when I surf?
Early April: 4/3mm & 3mm booties (optional) OR a 3/2
Mid April: 3/2mm
Late April: 2mm Long Jane & 2mm Jacket
● If you do NOT already have a 4/3 or a 3/2, do NOT buy these wetsuit options now!
● I would highly suggest buying a 2mm Long Jane and 2mm jacket.
● The water warms up quickly throughout April and May, so we transition to lighter wetsuits very quickly.
● To avoid buying a lot of different wetsuits to get you through the spring season, I highly recommend buying layers.
● A 2mm Long Jane with a 2mm jacket is the perfect combo to get you started this Spring.
● If you run cold, wait to start surfing until mid April or invest in a 3/2 if you just can’t wait to start catching waves!
● For detailed information about wetsuits, check out the Mermaid Surf: Wetsuit Guide or ask questions in our Mermaid Surf Club “Community” section for suggestions & recommendations.
🧼 WAX
What type of wax should I use?
Wax temperature: “Cool” 58-68℉
● ALL surfboards need wax! Yes, even soft-tops. You can find surf wax at all of your local surf shops.
● If you have a soft-top, you can simply layer COOL wax on top of COLD wax. Do NOT scrape wax off of your soft-top.
● If you have a hard-top, you scrape off the old wax and add a fresh layer of COOL wax.
● It is ideal to re-wax your board every time you transition to a different temperature range of wax.
● Although, you can certainly layer COOL wax on top of COLD wax and wait to re-wax your board until next month!
🌊 WAVES
What are the waves like this month?
● The waves are consistently the smallest during the Spring season, compared to the rest of the year, here in Wrightsville Beach.
● The waves are often blown out (textured & disorganized) in April due to high winds.
● Aim to surf the early morning sessions when the wind is the lightest.
● Check the daily Mermaid Surf Report (inside of the Mermaid Surf Club) for expert guidance on the surf conditions.

MAY
☀️ WEATHER
What are the average air temperatures this month?
Average daytime HIGH: 77-81℉
Average nighttime LOW: 66-67℉
- Expect mild sunrise and sunset surf sessions while the midday sessions heat up quickly and unfortunately, so does the wind!
- The winds are usually light throughout the morning and tend to steadily increase from the SOUTH-EAST (on-shore) most afternoons.
- Great news, the wind often calms back down in the evenings as the air temperature cools down. You can often score fun, clean waves during the sunset sessions. At the very least, you can enjoy a gorgeous sunset :)
- We can expect beautiful, breezy weather with the occasional afternoon thunderstorm.
- This is the perfect time of year to enjoy the beach before the crowds and extreme heat arrive!
💧 WATER
What are the average water temperatures this month?
Average LOW: 68-70℉ (early May)
Average HIGH: 73-75℉ (late May)
- Great news, the water will continue to warm up steadily throughout May.
- This is the perfect time to get back in the waves if you have taken the winter season off!
- The water is still brisk and wetsuits are highly recommended for your health, happiness, and comfort.
🏄♀️ WETSUITS
What should I wear when I surf?
Early MAY: 3/2mm OR 2mm Long Jane w/optional 2mm Jacket
Mid MAY: 2mm Long Jane OR 1-2mm Short Jane w/ optional 2mm Jacket
Late MAY: 2mm Long Jane OR 1-2 mm Short Jane w/ optional 2mm Jacket
- If you do NOT already have a 3/2mm, do NOT buy one now!
- I would highly suggest buying a:
- 2mm Long Jane
- 1-2mm Short Jane
- 2mm Jacket
- These wetsuits provide the perfect combos to get you through the rest of wetsuit season and into summer! LAYERS are your best friend this time of year.
- A Long Jane and a Short Jane both pair perfectly with a 2mm Jacket so there is NO need to buy a springsuit (but I’m not going to stop you!).
- When the air is cool and the wind is high, grab your jacket for a cozy layer. When the air temps are high and the wind is light, ditch the jacket and start working on your arm tan ;)
- For detailed information about wetsuits, check out the Mermaid Surf: Wetsuit Guide or ask questions in our Mermaid Surf Club “Community” section for suggestions & recommendations.

- It is ideal to re-wax your board every time you transition to a different temperature range of wax.
- MAY is a great month to re-wax your boards!
